- The Internet Archive was founded in 1996. At this time the organization began to collect and archive data that was donated by Alexa Internet. This first step toward archiving the contents of the Internet preserved relatively few websites.
- In 1999 the Internet Archive began to expand its archiving efforts through the use of webcrawlers, which explore the Internet and archive websites as they do so. This removed limitations on the number of websites that the Internet Archive could preserve.
- At present, the Internet Archive is archiving full websites, videos, images and audio files. The Internet Archive contains two petabytes of data, making it the world's largest library.
